Bergen City is located in western Norway and has a population of just over a quarter of a million people. However, despite its population, it offers real small-town charm.   • There are a large number of red deer in the city of Bergen city despite government regulated hunting. As a result, they do on occasion wander into residential areas to eat apples and roses.
  • May the 17th is the biggest day in the city as this is when Norwegians celebrate National Day. You can see parades, parties, orchestras, and much more if you visit during this holiday, but be forewarned – there are tens of thousands of tourists in Bergen during the event.

Bergen’s Main Claim to Fame

Bergen’s biggest attraction by far is Bryggen, which is a popular Unesco World Heritage Site that tourists have to see to believe. Essentially, it is as if this part of the city is frozen in time with its winding alleyways and hanging galleries. The most interesting part of Bryggen is the fact that this part of Norway’s heritage is still alive and well today. You can find the famous Fish Market here as well as dozens upon dozens of shops, restaurants, cafes, and street vendors selling unique Norwegian treats.

One of these, called 1877, offers an unforgettable meal in an atmosphere that is unlike any other restaurant in the area. Though the menu is straightforward and simple, it is a great place to enjoy seafood, local cheese with matching wine, and more. If you need to fill up on a budget, check out many of the smaller cafes situated in the heart of the city. Despite the undeniably Scandinavian atmosphere, you can find Chinese food, pizza, and even soup up and down the city streets.

Bergen city has several unique attractions to make your visit memorable. These include the Troldhaugen Edvard Grieg museum, which is truly a trip through time. This museum takes you back to 1907 with Grieg’s original furnishings and décor. The Fish Market is one of the largest in the world, and it gives you an opportunity to sample new types of seafood if you feel adventurous. Finally, there are Segway tours which, while interesting, provide a surprisingly efficient way to get around town.
